Vibrator of the Year
I showed up at my first "Passion Party" with no idea what to expect. This particular event, put on by Occidental College's Women! club, offered vague preparatory knowledge, emphasizing that it was an event for women only and that men would not be necessary.

In recent decades, with the rise and acceptance of feminism in our culture, it has become clear that not only do women not need men to pleasure them, but lo and behold, women can pleasure themselves!

I write this with no disrespect for men, especially considering many heterosexual women still have high sexual regard for the male species, and sure, women still "need" men to reproduce-just as much as they "need" us. But let's be clear on one thing: women are and will continue to be sexual with or without men as part of the equation.

The Pleasure Party I attended set out to celebrate women's sexual power and freedom. As we filed into the tiny, intimate room for the party, college women of all ages became giddy and crazed with excitement eyeing the bottles of lotions, liquids and gels that beckoned to be explained, demonstrated and experimented with.

Our Passion Party hostess, Portia, kicked things off by requesting two brave volunteers. My friend Clara and roommate Sara put on their game faces and volunteered for the first demonstration. Sara was given a fingertip-sized amount of what we would later find out was called "Pure Satisfaction UniSEX Enhancement Gel" and was instructed to go to the bathroom and rub it on her clitoris. A few minutes later Sara returned giggly and red in the face as she sat back down next to me-a bit more satisfied than when she had left. After nudging her to tell me what it felt like, she admitted that she had a 'very nice, tingly sensation' going on down there.

Throughout the evening, noticeably shy members of the crowd were chosen to sample some of the products alongside the more eager volunteers. My personal favorite from the evening was the strawberry-flavored "Nipple Nibbler,"" which has the tantalizing effect of IcyHot on your nipples-I recommend it with a money-back guarantee.

Everything Portia explained was passed around, smelled and felt by all of the women in attendance. Some of the favorites of the event included a vibrator that looked like your everyday tube of lipstick (powerful yet subtle), another vibrator called the "G-Whiz" (specifically made for the G-Spot) and a funky little vibrator called "Da'Bomb" (which penetrates its user while stimulating her clitoris).

For the partygoers who came expecting something more akin to a Tupperware party, the night was quite educational. Portia described three different kinds of orgasms she believes women are capable of: the clitoral, the vaginal and the g-spot. And if there was any confusion as to where these places were located in the vagina, Portia passed around a book explaining and visually showing each hot spot and the extent of its orgasmic abilities.

In addition to the focus on the vagina, the products demonstrated and sold at the Pleasure Party also doubled as ways for women to get in the mood. One of the games passed around at the party was called "Party Truth or Dare," which was about as straightforward as its name suggests. However, for those of us who played the more innocent game of Truth or Dare in high school with prank phone calls and a kiss on the lips, this grown up version of the classic gets a bit more risqué by challenging the players to explore their sexual history and knowledge.

Hands down, the Pleasure Party was a huge success and it was refreshing to see so many women take the time to go out and celebrate their sexuality. I was also pleasantly surprised to know that Occidental is able to celebrate women in this way. Hosting such an event on campus demonstrates that it is not only in women's hands to familiarize themselves with their sexuality, but the institutions that shape their minds and beliefs as well.
